Tachyonic Instability and Dynamics of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking
Spontaneous symmetry breaking usually occurs due to the tachyonic (spinodal) instability of a scalar field near the top of its effective potential at φ = 0. Naively, one might expect the field φ to fall from the top of the effective potential and then experience a long stage of oscillations with amplitude O(v) near the minimum of the effective potential at φ = v until it gives its energy to par...
متن کاملPomeranchuk instability: symmetry breaking and experimental signatures
We discuss the emergence of symmetry-breaking via the Pomeranchuk instability from interactions that respect the underlying point-group symmetry. We use a variational mean-field theory to consider a 2D continuum and a square lattice. We describe two experimental signatures: a symmetry-breaking pattern of Friedel oscillations around an impurity; and a structural transition.
متن کاملModulational instability, wave breaking, and formation of large-scale dipoles in the atmosphere.
We use direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow (water and air) to study the dynamics of the modulational instability of free surface waves and its contribution to the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere. If the steepness of the initial wave exceeds a threshold value, we observe wave-breaking events and the formation of large-scale dipole structur...
متن کاملModulational instability of spinor condensates
We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, that the ferromagnetic phase of the spinor Bose-Einstein condenstate may experience modulational instability of the ground state leading to a fragmentation of the spin domains. Together with other nonlinear effects in the atomic optics of ultra-cold gases (such as coherent photoassociation and four-wave mixing) this effect provides one more analogy ...
متن کاملThe Integrable Nature of Modulational Instability
We investigate the nonlinear stage of the modulational (or Benjamin–Feir) instability by characterizing the initial value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with nonzero boundary conditions (NZBC) at infinity. We do so using the recently formulated inverse scattering transform (IST) for this problem. While the linearization of the NLS equation ceases to be valid when ...
